Students receiving the instruction presented in this dialog should understand that the volume of a right prism is the product of its base area and height. Through analysis of cross-sections of prisms, students will be led toward an understanding of Cavalieri's principle.
cross-section*: a 2-dimensional shape that is formed by the intersection of a plane and a 3-dimensional shape
Cavalieri's principle**: If two 3-dimensional figures are of the same height, and their horizontal cross-sections at every height have the same area, then their volumes are equal.
*It is likely that students are already familiar with this term and concept. In case some are not, the definition is presented toward the beginning of the teacher-student version of this dialog. (Note: The definition of Cavalieri's principle, while shown here, is not presented early in the teacher-student version; students are instead led to the definition through the series of slides.)
**Shown above is Cavalieri's principle as applied in the comparison of 3-dimensional figures. There is also a 2-dimensional version of this principle which compares the areas of shapes bounded between parallel lines. At their discretion, instructors who wish for a more general presentation of Cavalieri's principle may include this version. What is shown above, however, suffices for the purposes of standards G-GMD.1 and G-GMD.2.
